The Elizabeth occupies two seven-storey Townhouses at numbers 36 and 37 in Eccleston Square. The Square was built in c.1835 by master builder Thomas Cubitt, who was said to be Queen Victoria’s favourite builder. He is also credited with building a number of streets in Belgravia as well as the East front of Buckingham Palace.
Eccleston Square takes its name from the Cheshire village of Eccleston, part of the estates of the landowners, the Dukes of Westminster. Originally low-lying swamp which was drained in the early 17th century, it was planned as a three-acre square in 1828 by Thomas Cubitt (1788-1855).
Former residents of the buildings that now form The Elizabeth include Lord Louis Mountbatten, Princess Victoria and William Henry Whitbread.
